Why Training?

People sometimes say, "Why would I need training? Scientific Word/WorkPlace is very easy to use, and it already does everything I want it to do".
In one sense, that's true: the proof of the pudding is in the eating. On the other hand, it's a bit like buying a Ferrari, only discovering first gear, but declining driving lessons on the grounds that you find driving it very easy and it gets you everywhere you want to go. What a shame, when it has all that potential for so much more...

For people wanting the very best out of their Scientific Word/WorkPlace software, there can be no substitute for professional training. As UK Distributors for MacKichan Software, we are pleased to offer the following Training Course Options for our customers: our Standard Two-Day Course which has been tried and tested over several years and many groups of people; the fast-moving Graduates' One-Day Course , developed at users' request; and the all-new Advanced Class for those who have completed one of the two Basic Courses. All courses are held at your premises.

Standard Two-Day Course - now includes new Beamer module
All you need to be fully functional in using Scientific Word/WorkPlace to produce beautifully typeset LaTeX documents. Covers everything that most users will ever need to know.

The Training Course consists of 2 days (usually Monday/Tuesday or Tuesday/Wednesday), each of 3 one-and-a-half hour sessions - you will find this quite enough to exhaust you! The times are: 10.30am - 12.00noon, Lunch, 1.00pm - 2.30pm, Tea/Coffee, 3.00pm - 4.30pm.
Each Training Course costs a total of Ł5280 + VAT (with Educational discount to Ł3520 + VAT). This includes all manuals etc. for an open class of up to 100 participants.
Each person in the class will need a computer with SW/P installed, plus one for the Trainer with video projection for demonstrating. We permit multiple installation for the purposes of training.
The preparatory 'homework' for the Course involves reading just one page - headed "Understanding the Logical Design Approach" in the booklet "Getting Started with SWP, SW and SNB" (pp3-4 of the v5.0 booklet).

For 6 months after purchasing Scientific Word/WorkPlace from us (9 months in certain circumstances), this Standard Two-Day Course is available significantly discounted for classes limited to four people; this offers personal attention within the Course, enabling you to maximize the benefit of being trained in our software in a cost-effective way (PoA).

Graduates' One-Day Course - now includes new Beamer module

By popular request we have created the "Graduates' One-Day Course" in Scientific Word/WorkPlace, covering the same material as our Standard Two-Day Course, but telescoping the 9 hours over 2 days into 6 hours on 1 day. This is achieved by:

Restricting places to Graduates only
Moving faster through the topics
Shortening the exercises, trimming off the fat
Lengthening the day from 3 sessions of one-and-a-half hours to 3 sessions of two hours: 10.00am - 12.00noon, Lunch, 1.00pm - 3.00pm, Tea/Coffee, 3.30pm - 5.30pm

The Graduates' One-Day Course is charged at Ł3960 + VAT for the 6 hours (Educational discount to Ł2640 + VAT).
In the light of the travelling involved, we accept bookings for Graduates' One-Day Courses back to back with another course - a Standard Two-Day Course, another Graduates' One-Day Course, or an Advanced Class (for different people, obviously) - so as to make the travelling worthwhile. Available days are Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Course Outline

Advanced Class - now includes new Beamer module
It has long been our intention to run Advanced Classes for those who have already completed our Standard Training Course (or Graduates' One-Day Course). We are now pleased to offer the Advanced Class: like the Graduates' One-Day Course, the Advanced Class comprises 6 hours of teaching over 1 day, and is charged at Ł3960 + VAT (Educational discount to Ł2640 + VAT).
Pre-requisites:

Completion of one of our Basic Training Courses (either the Standard Two-Day Course or the Graduates' One-Day Course ). To revert to the driving analogy, you wouldn't expect to do the Advanced Driving Test if you were a self-taught motorist who had never taken the basic test and got a driving licence!
Six months' day-to-day experience of using Scientific Word/WorkPlace since completing the Basic Course. You should not expect to take the Advanced Class back-to-back with one of our Basic Courses, any more than you would take the Advanced Driving Test the day after getting your licence - you need many months of ordinary driving experience first.
As a proficiency check, make sure you can complete the Basic Challenge , starting from the Article shell "Similar to the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society"; you should make use of automatic equation numbering, markers, cross-references, bibliography items & citations, footnotes and an automatic table of contents. Time allowed: 60 minutes.
